Randy's Awesome Sportsstuff Tube Ride
Randy's Awesome Sportsstuff Tube Ride
Author: Randy Vance
I was sprawled across the inflated disc of vinyl like Davinci's pentagram man in the circle. But this disc was whipping across the wake, scribing a perfect arc, at thrilling speed and heading directly toward the most mountainous wakes on the lake. More ...
The first wakes slapped the belly of the Frequent Flyer and my knuckles whitened. As the big bruiser pushed me skyward and I felt the ride smooth out and realized the wind had lifted me four feet off the water.
But the aerodynamics of the ride weren't quite enough to keep me airborne and the tube yawed right splatting me into the water like a swatted horse fly. My thoughts? If I shifted my weight to the left, could I have kept the Frequent Flyer soaring? My crew swung our Tigé towboat back depositing the Flyer at hand and I clambered back on top to try.
"Hit it!" And they did, with less mercy than the last ride. Photographer Bill Doster was at the wheel, enjoying a bit of sadistic fun and put the Tigé in a large, wake-ploughing circle. I noticed the waves rushing inward just as Bill peeled the boat outward in a figure eight. My relief was short lived, though because the boat turned 180 degrees, directly for the mountain of imploding waves for a second flight! The Frequent Flyer yawed left this time and I shifted right, but too much and the tube ejected me again.
